Meet Lisa

Lisa loves teaching and considers herself a lifelong learner. Her love of learning has taken her from Texas to New Zealand to Oregon to study a diverse range of subjects, including politics, law, viticulture, and philosophy. Her love of teaching has likewise taken her down a variety of rewarding paths, from teaching college courses, to homeschooling her son for two years, to developing curriculum and writing a textbook. She also has personal experience helping her son navigate the daunting college application process to elite schools.

Lisa’s teaching philosophy can be summed up in one word: engagement. She strongly believes that the best outcomes are achieved through a student’s deep engagement with the world of ideas. “The most rewarding thing about teaching is seeing a student light up and get excited about what they are learning.”

For Lisa, this excitement is best nurtured when learning is approached with a growth mindset. “Many students think ‘I’m not good at math’ or ‘Reading is hard for me,’ but I want students to see that such statements simply aren’t true—I want to help students recognize that regardless of their natural abilities and strengths, they can achieve meaningful understanding in any subject—and that’s exciting!”
