Meet Emily
Emily Church is an incoming medical student at the University of Washington School of Medicine and a neuroscience-trained researcher who helps students become efficient, confident learners.
She has tutored and coached students 1:1 since high school, supporting middle school through college learners across STEM, writing, and standardized tests. With years of tutoring and academic coaching experience, Emily teaches students how to handle high volumes of material without burning out—by using the same strategies she relies on in science and medicine: active recall, spaced repetition, and targeted practice. “Most students don’t need to work harder,” she tells students. “They need a plan that makes their effort count.”
Emily’s tutoring style is “diagnostic.” She listens for what’s actually getting in the way—missing foundations, a stubborn misconception, or the pressure of timed tests—then builds a clear, repeatable plan. Students learn to shift from passive rereading to high-yield habits like practice questions, active-recall flashcards, and spaced review, using mistakes as feedback rather than setbacks. “If you can retrieve it on demand,” Emily says, “you can use it on an exam—because that’s what exams are testing.” She also emphasizes sustainability and self-care so students can stay consistent: “My goal is for you to leave each session knowing exactly what to do next.”
A former NCAA varsity basketball player and team captain at Pomona College, Emily also supports student-athletes with time management and recruiting guidance—especially for high-academic programs (SCIAC, NESCAC, Patriot League, Ivy League).
Emily is experienced with neurodivergent learners (ADHD, anxiety, learning differences) and brings a calm, structured, strengths-based style to every session.
