Meet Jonah
Jonah Weaver brings more than twenty-six years of experience helping students develop as readers, writers, and independent thinkers. He has taught English, history, and humanities in public and private schools in Portland, the San Francisco Bay Area, and internationally. His experience spans a wide range of learning needs, from individualized instruction for students with learning differences to the challenges of AP and IB coursework.
Jonah’s approach combines a down-to-earth manner and sense of humor with clear structure and thoughtful expectations. He takes time to understand each student’s strengths and where they feel stuck, helping them make sense of assignments, organize their ideas, and break larger projects into manageable steps. His colleagues describe him as kind, engaging, and insightful, with a particular talent for challenging students while providing the support they need to succeed.
During six years at Portland’s Edison High School, which serves students with learning differences, Jonah taught English and history and helped students prepare for the transition to young adulthood. More recently, he directed Catlin Gabel’s Palma Scholars Program, teaching a humanities seminar centered on discussion and independent projects while meeting individually with students to support their growth. Across these settings, students have valued his honest, compassionate feedback and his commitment to their progress.
Outside teaching, Jonah enjoys spending time outdoors with his children and going on long runs in the mountains.
