Supporting Students

Meet Lauren

Lauren Frey is a writer, editor, and empathetic educator who helps students become more confident readers and writers while developing their own voices. Her experience ranges from coaching high school students on college application essays to supporting college students with composition, research, and homework planning. She has worked with neurodivergent and first-generation college students, adapting her approach to each learner’s needs, interests, and goals.

Lauren combines deep listening and thoughtful questions with practical strategies that make challenging work more manageable. She helps students annotate difficult texts, organize their ideas, and move from an uncertain first draft toward clear, purposeful writing. Her colleagues describe her as exceptionally organized and approachable, with a talent for offering feedback that is both precise and kind. She aims to build trusting relationships where students feel comfortable asking questions, trying new approaches, and stretching their abilities.

As co-founder of Copytext Magazine, a literary journal focused on revision and the drafting process, Lauren brings a working writer’s perspective to tutoring. She has also led adult reading cohorts on works such as Hamlet and Frankenstein, guiding participants through close reading and lively discussion. Her background includes more than five years in public health communications and consulting, translating complex information for different audiences. Her own path “from poetry to bar graphs” informs her enthusiasm for helping students connect their interests with possibilities for college and beyond.

Outside tutoring, Lauren enjoys reading, walking, building campfires on the coast, and baking chocolatey things. A proud Portland native, she graduated from Clackamas High School.
