Meet Our Portland Tutors
A majority of our Portland tutors are subject generalists, so they can adapt long-term to your student’s specific needs and provide support throughout their academic career.
Eric takes a people-first approach to leadership, ensuring tutors, students, and families feel supported while fostering long-term growth. That commitment to people and relationships has deep roots: Eric grew up surrounded by educators. His great-grandfather was a high school principal, and his grandmother, mother, and sister all taught in elementary schools. While he didn’t initially plan to follow in their footsteps, being immersed in a culture of learning gave him a lasting appreciation for education and the power of strong student–teacher relationships.
That appreciation deepened in college, where Eric studied Environmental Engineering and began tutoring classmates on the side. What started as a part-time job quickly became a calling. Over time, he came to see learning as a practice that extends far beyond academics. His natural curiosity and jack-of-all-trades mindset—spanning music, rock climbing, engineering, and more—shaped his belief that “when you develop yourself as a learner, you open the door to everything else.”
In 2020, Eric founded Emergent Education to put this philosophy into practice. He designed the company around connection, adaptability, and holistic growth, encouraging tutors to personalize their approach, emphasize critical thinking, and help students see the bigger picture of learning.
Today, Eric leads Emergent Education with a focus on long-term vision, tutor development, and family support. He remains closely involved in the tutoring process, always asking how to make learning more human, more holistic, and more empowering for everyone involved.

Then, as a college student, Ben worked as a peer tutor and teaching assistant for all things STEM.
Teaching and tutoring helped to reinforce Ben’s own understanding, inspiring him to seek out more opportunities. He quickly branched out into tutoring middle and high school students in STEM and the humanities. He continues to support students across a broad range of academic subjects and grade levels. Thirty years ago Ron Antlitz found and fell in love with teaching. As a special educator, he has dedicated his career to helping those who struggle to learn. During the day he applies this passion to working with students with learning, behavioral, social and emotional struggles at a local middle school. Sarah grew up helping her mom prepare her classroom every summer, but it wasn’t until she lived abroad that she began seeking social work roles in education. This interest led to her first formal teaching job in Taiwan, where she taught English to K-12 students. “I always saw myself more as a social worker than a teacher until I had the opportunity to teach and realized that teaching can be invaluable social work.”
After two years in Taiwan and nearly four years abroad, Sarah relocated to the West Coast. In Portland, she taught in Montessori settings as both a classroom teacher and a children’s yoga instructor through her own company. She also launched a private tutoring business to support families during distance learning, and briefly ran a Forest School at Mount Tabor. “Over the years, I am reminded that teaching is so much more than sharing information. It’s a profession that requires introspection and constant improvement to help my students succeed.”
